For virtually the first time since the 1940s, snugly knotted bed sheets recovered from the Half Moon Hotel room of Abe “Kid Twist” Reles, razzed posthumously by newspapermen as “The Canary Who Couldn’t Fly,” are examined. Over nearly seven decades, the circumstances of Reles’s demise have been saturated by conjecture; one version maintains that Reles was pitched from his sixth-floor window (below) by members of the police unit assigned to guard him while others insist Reles attempted escape or was playing a practical joke.
